I was inspired to order this book and many others on Polynesian lore after watching Disney's Moana. After watching the movie for about the fifth time, in the middle of Tamatoa's number "Shiny" I just couldn't take it anymore. Since collecting fairy tales, mythology and lore is my thing, I just had to know more.
When I began this book I knew nothing. It begins with a short introduction that includes a little blurb on pronunciation that I later realized was vital. The main body of every story is printed first (parts of the story with no change when told between islands) and then specific variations are introduced almost like a post script which can interrupt the flow of the tale. It honestly threw me for a while but it's easily adapted to. Now, around midway through mistakes start appearing. These mistakes range from minor things like an "m " being switched for an "n" as if you were typing too fast, commas appearing in the middle of a couple of perfectly good words, to in one case, a word being mangled to the point that only context could reveal the meaning. Perfectionists beware. For those slip ups I'm giving it four stars.
Otherwise, I was absolutely entranced by this demigod. Moana fans will find Maui's parents here along with his brother and sisters. However Moana is only mentioned once as part of the name to an island in X. The Oaha Legends of Maui: Maui and Pea-Pea the Eight Eyed. Now, to those looking to buy for a child: this Maui is not nice, or gentle. This Maui kills, causes mayhem for absolute spite at times and has a very short temper.

Great book, looks exactly as it does online. Will definitely enjoy reading it.
great stories from an amazing island. Was worth the read.
Maui is the man!
It covered many myths of Māui, Hina(sometimes his mother or wife) from various island groups around the Pacific in a clear and thorough manner.
This book reads like one long Wikipedia article. Not always necessarily a bad thing, but arguably the least interesting way to recount the exploits of Maui.
